Sustainable Growth: Omrin Partners with Actemium to Scale Up Biogas at Ecopark De Wierde

Ecopark De Wierde is a modern, sustainable waste-processing and circular-economy hub located in Heerenveen/Oudehaske, Friesland, Netherlands. Managed by Omrin, it combines multiple high-tech waste treatment systems with strong environmental and community focus.

In order to process residual waste into more biogas and new raw materials, the waste processor is expanding. To do so, Omrin chose Actemium as a trusted and local partner.

Expanding with Limited Power Capacity

With a strong focus on sustainability and circularity, Omrin has been making an important contribution to the region for years. And the ambition continues to grow.

We currently produce 19 million cubic meters of green gas per year. We want to move towards 23 million cubic meters

says Nico, project leader at Omrin.

The company is expanding its fermentation plant with a fourth fermenter. The major challenge is to strengthen the existing infrastructure and smoothly integrate the new systems into the ongoing processes, all while continuing the entire installation’s operations.

Leveraging a Network’s Strength to Serve Multiple Needs

To meet these specific expectations, Omrin teams were looking for a partner who could think along and move along. Actemium was approached as a trusted partner and overall project coordinator.

Actemium already does many projects for us in the field of automation and electrical engineering. They suggested that we also involve Omexom and Aqualectra. This gave us one point of contact, with three areas of expertise. That worked out very well.

Actemium coordinated the project and took care of the low-voltage cabling, comprising the routes and connections between transformer, distributor and to the field. Aqualectra designed and built a custom low-voltage distributor and delivered it on site. Omexom took care of the entire medium-voltage part, including the installation of a new transformer.

Each party contributed its own strengths, but we presented ourselves as one team

says Tim ter Huurne, project leader at Actemium.

Joining Forces on Sustainability

For Omrin, the fourth digester means more than just extra capacity: it is a concrete step towards a circular region. Thanks to the new system, the installation will soon produce up to 23 million cubic metres of green gas annually. The collaboration with Actemium, Aqualectra and Omexom makes this possible. “They are really helping us to take a step towards the future with this project,” says Nico.

I am proud of what we have achieved together here. Omrin now has an installation with which they can make further sustainability efforts.
