Actemium Powers Södra’s Groundbreaking Lignin Plant Project

Södra, one of Sweden’s leading forest industry groups, is making a bold move to revolutionize sustainable materials by building the world’s largest sulfate lignin production facility.

Actemium, through INAC Process AB, has been selected as a key partner to lead major installation work on this ambitious project in Mönsterås. With operations set to begin in 2027, this initiative marks a major milestone in adding value to forest-based raw materials.

A Strategic Partnership for Industrial Innovation

Actemium’s role in the Mönsterås project is more than just technical execution—it’s about trust and long-term collaboration. The company has already played a key role in the early phases of the lignin plant’s development, delivering crucial infrastructure such as junction boxes and air distribution systems.

“This project is a strong vote of confidence in our capabilities as a stable and long-term industrial partner,” says Robert Persson, CEO of INAC Process AB, one of the 11 companies representing Actemium in Sweden. “It highlights our technical expertise and the trust we’ve built over the years. We’re proud to be part of something that is not only important to Södra but also to the wider industry.

A Complex and Large-Scale Installation Assignment

The next phase of Actemium’s involvement will include a broad and technically demanding scope of work:

  • 2,500 instrument hook-ups
  • Installation of 100 junction boxes
  • Setup of control racks and cross-connections
  • Cable routing and installation of multicore cabling

This work will employ 10 to 30 team members from November 2025 through January 2027.

“We’ve now secured the next crucial phase of the project,” says Thomas Tweedie, Project Manager at Actemium. “Beyond installation, we’re also contributing to planning and preparation, which further deepens our role as a strategic partner.

Supporting the Future of Green Chemistry

Sulfate lignin, a byproduct of the pulping process, holds great potential as a sustainable alternative to fossil-based materials. By transforming lignin into a high-value product, Södra is taking a significant step toward circular bioeconomy goals—and Actemium is right at the heart of making it happen.

This project not only showcases the power of cross-industry collaboration but also reflects the growing importance of sustainable innovation in industrial engineering. Actemium’s involvement highlights how technical excellence, planning, and long-term commitment can drive transformative change in the forest and chemical sectors.
