Powering Progress: Actemium upgrades Corteva’s Electrical System

As a trusted partner in industrial performance, Actemium Spain continues to play a key role in modernizing critical infrastructures across the country. The latest milestone is a new strategic project for Corteva Agriscience, one of the world’s leading companies in the agricultural sector.
With a long-standing relationship that spans more than two decades, this collaboration demonstrates Actemium Spain’s expertise in complex industrial environments and its commitment to delivering tailored, future-ready solutions.
A Strategic Collaboration to Reinforce Energy Infrastructure
Corteva Agriscience, a global leader fully dedicated to agriculture, has selected Actemium Spain to upgrade part of the electrical system at its manufacturing plant in Asturias. The goal of the project is to reconfigure the power supply to the refrigeration compressor motor, connecting it to a newly built transformer substation designed exclusively for this purpose.
We will manage the project end to end—from engineering, supply, and assembly to commissioning—leveraging our proven expertise in complex electrical projects within high-demand industrial environments.
Fernando Martín, Business Manager at Actemium Spain
This initiative supports Corteva’s ongoing efforts to adapt technologically and comply with evolving regulatory standards while maintaining maximum energy efficiency and operational reliability.
Tailored Engineering for a Non-Standard Transformer Substation
One of the project’s key challenges is the design and implementation of a non-standard transformer substation (CT) tailored to meet the unique requirements of the plant’s operations. This includes custom engineering, manufacturing, and installation to ensure optimal performance, safety, and compliance.
The project will involve:
- Disconnecting the existing 6 kV line
- Modifying the medium-voltage (MV) switchgear to enable a new output connection
- Installing new MV lines to link existing systems with the new CT
- Constructing cable ducts and installing cable trays
- Integrating lighting, signaling, and fire detection/suppression systems
Additionally, Actemium Spain will adapt the control systems to integrate the new infrastructure with the existing automation environment. This seamless integration will ensure safe and efficient operation with minimal disruption to ongoing production.
Phased Execution and Minimal Operational Disruption
The work will be executed in two main phases to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any impact on Corteva’s production:
- Phase 1 (Autumn 2025): Civil works, construction of ducting, and installation of the transformer substation and MV lines
- Phase 2 (November 2025): Final connection and commissioning during a scheduled technical shutdown
To maintain continuous power supply, a temporary generator will be used during the connection phase. These logistical measures have been carefully planned to ensure full operational continuity at the plant. Joan Amatllé, Director of Actemium Spain, emphasised:
Our teams’ deep understanding of demanding industrial environments like Corteva’s, along with our expertise in electrical and instrumentation solutions, allows us to deliver complex projects with complete safety and reliability. This project is a testament to the mutual trust built over more than 20 years of collaboration.
This latest initiative reflects Actemium’s mission to support clients throughout the entire lifecycle of their industrial facilities—offering safe, sustainable, and customised solutions that enhance long-term performance.
