Shaping the Future of Transport: Dunkirk’s Hydrogen Production Station Supported by Actemium

The SHYMED Project Company (Hydrogen Solution for Electric Mobility in Dunkirk), a partnership between the Dunkirk Urban Community, Hynamics (EDF Group subsidiary), and Banque des Territoires, has been operating a state-of-the-art hydrogen production and distribution station powered by electrolysis since September 1st.
Located in the Petite-Synthe industrial zone in Dunkirk, this 1.25 MW facility can produce up to 540 kg of hydrogen daily, reducing CO₂ emissions by approximately 1,145 tonnes each year. It will provide a steady supply of low-carbon hydrogen to fuel 10 buses and 3 waste collection vehicles serving the Urban Community.
Local Expertise Ensuring Rapid, Reliable Service
After a competitive tender launched in October 2024, Actemium Maintenance Mécanique Dunkerque was awarded the contract in July 2025 to deliver maintenance and operational support for the station over the next three years. The company will provide a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary service—including mechanical, piping, electrical, and instrumentation expertise—ensuring smooth, day-to-day operations with quick, responsive support right on site.
Strengthening Skills for Cutting-Edge Hydrogen Technology
Actemium’s first service call is scheduled for late October and will be paired with specialized training by Hynamics on hydrogen production via electrolysis. This targeted expertise will expand the company’s already extensive experience in gas distribution—covering nitrogen, oxygen, and hydrogen.
For over 26 years, Actemium has maintained Air Liquide’s gas pipelines and distribution stations across Hauts-de-France. Building on this trusted partnership, in July 2025, Air Liquide entrusted Actemium with a highly specialized operation involving a vacuum cold box to convert gaseous hydrogen into liquid hydrogen at the aerospace site in Kourou, French Guiana.
A Proven Partner with Multiple Strengths
Actemium’s extensive background in gas production and distribution was key to Hynamics’ choice. Additional factors included the company’s proven ability to deliver multi-technical services, its strong customer service and maintenance culture, and its close proximity to the SHYMED site—located in Grande-Synthe, just minutes from Dunkirk.
